UK Sound Testing & Acoustic Support
We encourage clients to speak to us early so testing requirements and any acoustic considerations can be planned in — helping avoid costly revisions later.
We support developers, contractors, architects and homeowners across the UK with sound insulation testing and practical advice. Our aim is to help you achieve Building Control sign-off with minimal disruption and clear next steps.
What we do
Pre-completion sound insulation testing and reporting for Building Regulations (Approved Document E).
Who we help
New builds, refurbishments and conversions: houses, flats, hotels, mixed-use and commercial developments.
Building Regulations
Approved Document E outlines what’s required for sound insulation performance. In most cases, new dwellings and material change-of-use projects will need pre-completion testing before Building Control sign-off.
How Many Tests Will I Need?
A “set” commonly includes combinations of airborne wall tests, airborne floor tests and impact floor tests depending on how dwellings are separated. Requirements depend on layout and construction groups, so it’s best to send drawings or a plot schedule for confirmation.
Quick examples
• Terraced / semi-detached houses: usually airborne wall tests
• Flats: usually airborne + impact tests (floors), plus airborne walls where applicable
• Hotels / HMO: testing depends on separation between rooms and floors
Best approach
Send drawings / plot schedule and we’ll advise the likely number of tests and help you plan the most efficient test visit.
| Property Type | Typical Test Set | Typical Rooms |
|---|---|---|
| Dwelling houses (including bungalows) | Airborne wall tests (as applicable) | Living room / Bedroom (between dwellings) |
| Flats (separating floors, no separating walls) | Airborne + Impact floor tests | Living room + Bedroom (floor) |
| Flats (separating floors and walls) | Airborne floor + Impact floor + Airborne wall tests | Living room / Bedroom (floor + wall) |
| Rooms for residential purposes (e.g. HMO / hotel) | Adapted set to suit circumstances | Main rooms between units |

FAQs
Some common questions we get about sound insulation testing:
When should we book sound testing?
Book once the separating walls/floors are complete and finished to a “near final” condition. Final floor finishes, sockets and light fittings can usually be in place — but avoid booking before all critical acoustic layers are installed. If you’re unsure, send photos and drawings and we’ll advise.
How long does a site test take?
Timing depends on how many sets are required and site layout. As a guide, a single set can often be completed within a few hours. Larger multi-unit sites can take longer. We’ll confirm expected duration when booking.
What do we need to prepare before the engineer arrives?
Ensure access to the units/rooms being tested, power availability, and that the spaces are reasonably clear. Windows and doors should be fitted and operational, and any penetrations/sealant works should be complete.
What happens if we don’t pass?
If results fall short, we’ll explain what the figures mean and suggest practical improvement steps (often around sealing, flanking paths, or specific construction details). Retesting can then be booked once remedial works are complete.
Do you provide a report for Building Control?
Yes — you’ll receive a clear report of the test results that can be provided to Building Control / Approved Inspectors as part of your compliance documentation.
Can you test flats, houses, hotels and HMOs?
Yes. Testing requirements vary based on the separating elements (walls/floors) and how the building is laid out. Send your plans and we’ll confirm what’s needed.
